A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry suggests that 1 in 6 British adults have experienced symptoms of clinical depression at some point in their lives. Depression is one of the most common conditions in our society, affecting many people in all age groups. It is believed depression a major reason why people are unable to be as physically active they used to in the past. Scientists from the University of Exeter have sought to determine why this is so and, importantly, what makes a person more or less likely to develop depression depending on where in the world a person is or their background. The team of researchers took blood samples from 8,078 Britons around the age of 18 and 23 who had experienced at least one year in the UK and then compared them to people who had never resided in the UK. Professor Chris Murray, head of the school psychology at Exeter, said: "People have been looking to understand people's genetic make-up for years. Even at this level we can start to see signs in our study which we may be able to use prevent depression at a much earlier stage. "It is a hugely exciting area of science, potentially meaning that we could see an improved understanding of how genes affect the risk of diseases such as depression in coming years." When people were compared to the from UK population, those living in areas with a high rate of unemployment were found to be more likely have been diagnosed with clinical depression than those who were employed. According to the study, this is perhaps partly the result of genetic risks which, although unknown, could have a positive effect on emotional wellbeing while at work. The scientists were unable to prove that any of the genetic changes they identified were the reason why people who have low levels of depression are more likely to be unemployed. However, given that those who developed depression were more likely to be unemployed, it is likely these genetic risk factors played a prominent part in their case. Professor Murray added: "In light of this study we think it is likely that the economic downturn and possible impact on health services such as mental could have a real bearing on depression rates in the UK and wider Europe. "It is important that we do all can to understand the causes of depression and ensure people are available when their situation needs support." Depression - the UK's leading mental health condition: The number of adults in England affected by clinical depression currently reaches over 10 million. Around 10% of us will develop depression in their lifetime. Nearly half of all suicide attempts are caused by depression and many people with do not get access to effective treatment. Mental problems such as stress, family or work pressures can contribute to depression. A greater incidence of early onset some mental health problems, including depression and anxiety disorder, in women than men. Depression can have a devastating effect on the people affected, with high mortality rates. Rates of suicide amongst those affected and their friends family may also be higher among those at risk than the general population.
