KMDC Conferenec Dinner 2022 : Knowledge Monetization - from University Researches to Commercials
On November 2022, KMDC (Knowledge Management Development Center) organized a face to face gathering during a time when there was still a Covid restriction. However, we had major success with over 20 people gathered that night. We were delighted to have Mr. Paul Wang, Deputy Director – Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as our guest speaker. He shared his experiences with real-life examples in various aspects of today’s approach on the monetization of university researches.
The event also offered a rare chance for the attendees to reconnect with their peers and network with new contacts in person after a prolonged period of social distancing due to the pandemic. Many members expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences face to face, which they said was more engaging and satisfying than online meetings. Some members also said they felt more motivated and energized after the event, as they gained new insights and perspectives from the speaker and other participants.
- "It was a very informative and inspiring talk by Paul. He gave us a lot of insights into how universities can collaborate with industries and society to create value from their research outputs."
- "I really enjoyed the dinner event. It was great to see some familiar faces and make new connections. The venue was nice and the food was delicious."
- "Thank you KMDC for organizing this event. It was a rare opportunity to learn from an expert in knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship. I hope there will be more events like this in the future."

Webinar: The Critical Success Factors In The Smart City Era
Thank you for our KMDC Exco Member, Dr Carlos Tam, who would like to share with us his doctoral research on Smart City on 29 July 2021.
Dr Tam is experienced in leading Innovation & Technology I&T initiatives e.g. Smart City, Digital Innovation & Transformation on 5G, AI, VA, Big Data and managing many signature projects originated across different industries in Hong Kong and Macau, including banking and finance, hospitality, gaming, utilities, education and government sectors.
According to International Telecommunication Union provided that "A smart sustainable city is an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies and other means to improve quality of life, the efficiency of urban operation and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects." (ITU-T, 2015a p. 1).
Dr Tam will share with us the vision of smart city which is to make people happier, healthier, smarter and more prosperous, it is necessary to re-structure, re-configure and re-establish the status quo into more modern cities, not to say smart cities, to cope with existing and future challenges. In Hong Kong, there are around 1,500 technology startups and practitioners situated and operated in Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, which are engaging in smart services businesses. It is an urgent issue to examine the core elements that allow smart services providers to sustain and/or grow their business in response to the increasing and vast demand for smart products, services and solutions in the smart city era whereby one of the possible answers could be the development and identification of the critical success factors, which drive and motivate smart services providers to move and go faster, higher and farther aiming at attaining and achieving their business objectives on one hand and maintain their corporate sustainability and growth on the other.

Webinar: To Share or Not To Share - Sharing with information security
To follow up with our successful webinar held last month, KMDC is delighted to announce another KM Sharing Webinar to be held on Wednesday, 29th July 2020.
We are honored to have 2 renowned KM experts, Dr. Philip Fung and Dr. Trevor Lui to conduct a workshop style webinar on the aforementioned subject. Both Dr. Fung and Dr. Lui are founding members of KMDC and had served as EXCO for KMDC.
Companies want employees to share what they know for greater creativity, higher innovation, and better performance. People may ask the question Why do I need to share? What is in it for me? Pressuring people to share knowledge rather than making them see the value of sharing is not the solution. Besides, there are situations where there may be associated risks in sharing critical knowledge. Information sharing effectively and maintaining data IP protection have always been a dilemma for many companies. How does company strike a balance between these two seemingly opposing goals?
With this webinar, we will learn the key requirements of ISO 30401:2018 Knowledge management systems - Requirements, and ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security management; how the two standards can be adopted to build knowledge sharing systems and culture with consideration of information protection requirements.
Dr. Lui will lay out the rationale behind the development of ISO30401 and how one could use the implementation of the standard as a roadmap to launch their KM journey.
Dr. Fung will follow up by highlighting the importance aspects of ISO27001. Traditional 3rd party certification approach in achieving standard recognition, similar to ISO9001, may not have the motivation to adopt other management standards. Dr. Fung will show how one can leverage the standard as an alternative approach to develop their organizational learning and adoption of best practices. Companies can choose the best mix to achieve their business goals.
Before the Q&A session, Dr. Fung and Dr. Lui will discuss how to achieve the culture of sharing without compromising information security, discuss other available approaches and to answer questions from the participants.
About the Speaker:
|
Dr. Philip Fung is a specialist in knowledge management and has advised public and private companies to set up knowledge management system and build up knowledge sharing culture. He is also a management consultant, executive coach and trainer.
In the last 15 years, Dr. Fung focused his effort on leadership development and organizational development for NGOs. He also taught strategic planning and retail management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong.
|
|
Dr. Trevor Lui is the managing director of Knowledge Associates Hong Kong and the founder of Wise Smart Consultants Ltd., a strategic process analyst, innovation & technology, and knowledge management (KM) consultant based in Hong Kong; specializing in knowledge and strategic management, project and change management, process innovation and IT management.
His has been a strategic advisor / KM consultant for the World Bank, International Atomic Energy Agency, UN agencies and a few local companies. He is also teaching the knowledge management course of the Master degree programs for the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Business and Economic at the University of Hong Kong.
